The Life of Ellen Browning Scripps (2025)

Short Documentary | Forthcoming for the centennial of Scripps College

Journalist, philanthropist, and educator Ellen Browning Scripps (1836-1932) made indelible marks on her community across San Diego, Southern California, and beyond. A woman ahead of her time, she attended college in the 1850s in one of the only US institutions that admitted women, published works in her family's newspaper business, traveled across the globe, and advocated for feminist and progressive movements as she eventually made her life on the West Coast. Featuring interviews with Amy Marcus-Newhall, 12th President of Scripps College, Jennifer Martinez Wormser, Director of the Ella Strong Denison Library, and Dr. Molly McClain, author of the biography Ellen Browning Scripps: New Money and American Philanthropy, 1836-1932. Shot using materials from Ella Strong Denison Library and the Ellen Browning Scripps Papers.
